Program Overview

Your Open Campus Block in Athens places you in a city where ancient history and modern life intersect, while giving you the flexibility to shape a study abroad experience around your goals. You’ll enroll in CIEE courses and online courses taught through CIEE's global academic partner, ASU. Enrich your time through co-curricular and extracurricular experiences like exploring the Acropolis and nearby archaeological sites, spending time in the lively neighborhoods of Plaka and Monastiraki, and taking excursions to the nearby Aegean islands. Daily life unfolds among historic landmarks, vibrant street life, and a culture that blends long-standing traditions with a dynamic present.

CIEE Athens offers diverse housing options to ensure you're comfortable in your home away from home. From single accommodation in shared apartments to studio apartments, we will strive for your accommodation preferences to be met. All housing has convenient access to plenty of shopping, supermarkets, restaurants, and public transportation.

  • Academic Projects: Enroll in an optional for-credit academic project that aligns with your goals, qualifications, resume, and availability of placements.

CIEE’s excursions and cultural activities in Athens will open doors for you to explore Greece’s rich diversity, language, culture, history, and timeless beauty in ways that will enhance your time abroad.       

Samples of excursions and activities: 

  • Uncover the mystique of Delphi as you explore iconic landmarks where ancient prophecies once shaped Greek civilization 
  • Wander through Nafplio, Greece’s enchanting former capital, where neoclassical mansions, seaside promenades, and the hilltop Palamidi Fortress create a postcard-perfect setting 
  • Stroll through the charming Plaka district, Athens’ oldest and most picturesque neighborhood, where winding cobblestone streets lead to souvenir shops brimming with local crafts and treasures

Arizona State University (ASU): Brought to you by CIEE in partnership with ASU, enhance your international coursework with online classes that align with your degree requirements. ASU offers thousands of online courses in asynchronous 7.5-week sessions that fit within the CIEE academic calendar.

GAIN Travel Grants - Up to $1,500 toward travel costs guaranteed to students with a FAFSA SAI of $10,000 or less. Higher should still apply!

Gilman Go Global Grants - Up to $2,500/semester, $1,500/quarter, and $1,000 guaranteed to Benjamin A Gilman International Scholarship applicants.

Merit-Based Scholarships - Up to $2,500/semester, $1,500/quarter, and $750/summer awarded to students deomonstrating high academic achievement.
