Peru: Latin American Studies in Peru
PeruThis program is designed as a seminar in Latin American Studies, focusing most directly on Peruvian culture and history. Based in the historic city of Lima, the program includes visits to Cuzco, the world famous Macchu Picchu ruins, Lake Titicaca, and other cultural sites. The course examines contemporary Peru from historical, geographical, political, economic, social and cultural perspectives; these issues are studied from the perspective of themes such as women, the family, education, religion, indigenous peoples, human rights, political structure and economic models.

Information: Lima, the capital of Peru, lies on the country's arid Pacific coast. Though its colonial center is preserved, it's a bustling metropolis and one of South America’s largest cities. It's home to the Museo Larco collection of pre-Columbian art and the Museo de la Nación, tracing the history of Peru’s ancient civilizations. The Plaza de Armas and the 16th-century cathedral are the heart of old Lima Centro.

This course examines contemporary Peru from a historical, geographical, political, economic, environmental, social, and cultural perspective. These issues are studied from the perspective of themes such as women, the family, education, religion, indigenous peoples, human rights, political structure and economic models. Using videos, newspapers, and other media from important events, in addition to excursions, students will be introduced to the complex issues facing modern Peru.

Billing for the summer 2018 programs will occur upon registration into the courses associated with the Study Abroad program in STAR. The payment deadlines for the program will be the same as WVU Summer Semester Tuition and Fees. Registration will occur in mid-April, students will receive correspondence from OGA with registration instructions upon acceptance into the program after the application deadline. All payments are due in full before trip departure. Payments can be made through STAR or by contacting the Mountaineer HUB at (304) 293-4006.
