A modern university with a rich history, the University of Amsterdam (UvA) traces its roots back to 1632, when the Golden Age school Athenaeum Illustre was established to train students in trade and philosophy. Today, with more than 34,000 students, 5,000 staff and 250 study programs (Bachelor's and Master's), many of which are taught in English, it is one of the larger comprehensive universities in Europe. UvA is a member of the League of European Research Universities and also maintains intensive contact with leading research universities around the world. The Graduate School of Social Sciences is a dynamic, multifaceted institution marked by high academic standards, an international atmosphere, and a vibrant academic community.

As one of the most culturally and intellectually important cities in Western Europe, Amsterdam provides an ideal environment for academic study. The inhabitants of Amsterdam - Amsterdammers - are easy-going and welcoming to foreigners. English is the city's unofficial second language. Amsterdam is a colorful and lively city that has a lot to offer. With 735,000 inhabitants (as compared to London's 7.5 million and Paris's 10 million), it has all the advantages of a major metropolitan center but with a cozy, small-scale feel.

Amsterdam boasts beautiful architecture and over 150 canals, lending the city its characteristic shape and atmosphere. It is full of museums, art galleries, theatres, concert halls, and many lovely parks, which serve as the inhabitants’ gardens in summer. The city is home to world famous music, opera, theatre and dance companies, as well as many internationally recognized visual artists.
