China: Chinese Language & Culture Immersion

ShanghaiThis four-week Chinese language and culture immersion program aims to enhance the students’ Chinese language skills as well as cultural awareness by having the students interact with Chinese native speakers on a daily basis. The students will receive three hours of Chinese language instruction in the classroom every day from Monday to Friday. There will be cultural lectures and workshops twice a week, including Chinese medicine, calligraphy, martial arts, music instruments, etc. Students will also take excursions to historical and cultural sites on the weekend. Successful completion of this program will enable the student to improve their language skills, develop their knowledge and appreciation of Chinese culture and civilization, and experience firsthand the dynamic city life and all the economic developments in Shanghai and Nanjing, China.

Information: Nanjing, capital of China’s eastern Jiangsu province, is roughly 300km up the Yangtze River from the city of Shanghai. It was the national capital during part of the Ming dynasty. Many monuments and landmarks remain, including Zhonghua Gate (Gate of China), a preserved 14th-century section of the massive wall that contained the old city’s southern entrance.

Information: Shanghai, on China’s central coast, is the country's biggest city and a global financial hub. Its heart is the Bund, a famed waterfront promenade lined with colonial-era buildings. Across the Huangpu River rises the Pudong district’s futuristic skyline, including 632m Shanghai Tower and the Oriental Pearl TV Tower, with distinctive pink spheres. Sprawling Yu Garden has traditional pavilions, towers and ponds

This is a 32-day Chinese culture immersion program held in Tianjin (28 days) and Beijing (4 days), China. In Tianjin, students will take 4 hours of cultural lectures in the classroom each week.  The lectures (16 hours total) include Chinese martial arts, traditional music, Chinese medicine, calligraphy, theater, etc.  Classes will also be held at museums, historical and cultural sites, and famous landmarks in the evening and on the weekends (18 hours total).  In Beijing, students will learn about the past and present development of the capital city (16 hours). This study abroad course is designed to introduce students to important elements of Chinese civilization, culture, and modern development.  It aims to build upon their foundation whereby students are enabled to further analyze and understand Chinese people and their society in a cultural context.

Billing for the summer 2017 programs will occur upon registration into the courses associated with the Education Abroad program in STAR. The payment deadlines for the program will be the same as WVU Summer Semester Tuition and Fees. Registration will occur in mid-March, students will receive correspondence from OGAwith registration instructions upon acceptance into the program after the application deadline. All payments are due in full before trip departure. Payments can be made through STAR or by contacting the Mountaineer at (304) 293-4006.
